MATSUO, Seiichi
M.D., Director, Nagoya University Hospital

Nagoya University Hospital was founded as a temporary public hospital in 1871 on the site of a law court of Nagoya Han, a feudal domain.  The hospital has grown over the 140 years since then with the help of many people.  In 2004, Nagoya University Hospital became an incorporated entity, like all other national universities and renamed National University of Nagoya University Graduate School of Medicine.  This marked the greatest change for Nagoya University Hospital as well, since the university made a fresh start under the nation's new education system in 1949.  This change to the university means that the hospital also needs to make changes in various aspects.  In 2009, we set our mission as contributing to society through clinical care, education and research. To achieve this mission, we established four basic goals: provide high-quality, safe, state-of-the-art medical care; train leading medical professionals; pioneer next-generation medical technologies and care; and support community medicine through personnel exchange.  Each of our staff members makes every effort to meet the requirements to us today.
In May 2009, we opened our new Out-patients Clinic, following the Ward and the Clinical Laboratory and Examination Center, thus completing a decade of work under our renewal plan.  In March 2010, improvements to the hospital entrance and the surroundings were completed, transforming the appearance of the hospital and dramatically improving both the environment for patients and the working environment for the staff.  The hospital facilities have been significantly upgraded, the operating rooms and ICU have been expanded, and state-of-the-art medical systems such as surgical-assist robots and intensity modulated radiotherapy systems have been installed.  In April 2011, full-time professors were assigned to the Department of Quality and Patient Safety, improving the quality of medical care and further strengthening the system to promote medical safety.  The Center for Advanced Medicine and Clinical Research, which started around the same time, has grown to an organization that has over 45 staff members, as a system that powerfully supports research and development of new medical technology, which is a core mission of a university hospital.  In April 2012, the hospital was approved to serve as a Center for Maternal - Neonatal Care to provide high-quality perinatal care and train perinatal care professionals.  In addition, a center prepared for simulation of advanced medical treatment technology and training equipment will be established.  To date, more the 10 thousands patients are using this center, and we intend to enable to use by surrounding medical institutions and medical school as well as Nagoya University Hospital.  In this way, the university's functions are being reinforced every year to enable it to contribute to the community as a center of medical education and medical care in the central Japan area and to distribute information to the world.
Competent and committed personnel are essential both for safe, high-quality medicine, and also enable us to accomplish our mission.  In addition to the upgraded facilities, we have highly motivated people who are working hard every day for patients as well as teaching junior staff.  In this increasingly harsh environment for medicine, we are striving to run a high motivated hospital that makes an impact on social contribution.
This brochure describes Nagoya University Hospital as it is today.  We would greatly appreciate your continued support.
