The first Joint Degree Program of its kind in Japan. " Nagoya University and the University of Adelaide International Program in Comprehensive Medical Science I "

○ The Medical Science Doctoral Program at Nagoya University Graduate School of Medicine and the Faculty of

Health and Sciences at the University of Adelaide have signed a formal agreement to offer a "Joint Degree"

doctoral program called "Nagoya University and the University of Adelaide International Program in

Comprehensive Medical Science I" During the four-year doctoral course, students will be fully registered

in both universities and stay at the partner university for a specified period. Upon completion,

students will receive a joint degree diploma with both universities' names.

This program is the first of its kind in Japan, and students are now being accepted for the October semester.

○Joint degree programs with foreign universities are new programs allowed after the revision of the Standards for

Establishment of Universities in November, 2014. Therefore, institutionally, Japanese universities have become

able to offer a joint degree program with universities in foreign countries. MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture,

Sports, Science & Technology in Japan) has permitted the establishment of new programs, such as the Joint

Degree Program with the University of Adelaide, on June 15, 2015.

○ By participating in the joint course, students are able to receive fulfilling educational programs that were not

possible in a single university or with a strictly domestic education. The goal of this program is to allow students

to gain an international perspective and competitive research skills. The program also aims at generating

the next generation of excellent researchers. The Joint Degree Program allows universities to offer curriculums

that emphasize the strengths of each institution.

○Nagoya University has been chosen as one of the Top Global Universities by MEXT. Nagoya University is

committed to becoming a world leader in cutting edge research. Thus, the establishment of the Joint Degree

Program is expanding the framework of joint education and research. Nagoya University would like to expand its

influence in the Asian region and become known as Asia's 'Hub' University.

Abstract of the Joint Degree Program

Name of the school : Graduate School of Medicine

Name of the major : Nagoya University and the University of Adelaide International Program in Comprehensive Medical Science I Degree : Doctoral of Philosophy (in Medicine)

Number of students : 4 students (2 students whose principal school is Nagoya university,

2 students whose principal school is the University of Adelaide.)

Manner of instruction : English will be used as the common language. The students must stay and

do research at the partner university at least one year between their second

year and the beginning of their fourth year.

Other : Financial support is available. We are going to recruit students for the October semester.

Expected results

The Joint Degree Program offered through Nagoya University and the University of Adelaide will draw upon

the strengths of each institution to offer an educational opportunity unavailable to researchers working in only

a single institution. The result will be the production of a new generation of researchers equipped with a broad

perspective and skills that will make them competitive in the global arena.

Additionally, this Joint Degree Program will allow Nagoya University to strengthen its reputation with foreign

institutions. This program will serve as the benchmark for the quality of education offered at Nagoya University.

Such strengthening of reputation will benefit Nagoya University greatly in its dealings with foreign institutions.

Thus, the Joint Degree Program will play a major role in promoting the quality of Nagoya University

internationally.

・Individuals who will become leaders in clinical research within the international community. ・General medical researchers in the field of life-sciences. ・Leaders in the field of applications of medical research.

※What is a joint degree? Students must take joint courses established by collaborating universities. Upon completion,

students will receive one diploma from the two collaborating universities. The Joint Degree

Program had not been approved in Japan until now.

※What is a double degree? Students must take courses that fulfill the requirements of both of the collaborating universities.

Upon completion, students will obtain diplomas from both universities respectively.
