Thank you for your interest in the Program for International Research Students at Nagoya University School of Medicine. To apply, please follow the application procedure as explained below. (International students participating in the aforementioned program shall be hereafter referred to as "the Student" or "Students".)

1. Eligibility

  • 1) The Student must be a duly enrolled undergraduate or graduate student in a fully accredited school in his/her own country.
  • 2) The Student must be in good standing in his/her school and must have a written letter of approval from the Dean of his/her affiliated school or the Dean's authorized representative.
  • 3) The Student must be able to communicate fluently in Japanese or in English (for example, a TOEFL iBT score of over 100 is desirable if English is not the Student's native language).
  • 4) The Student must refrain from taking any side jobs during the period of this program.

2. Period

- One week to 4 weeks (Please inquire for extending length of stay).

3. Certification of attendance

The Student would be given certification of attendance but no credits. Certification of attendance for clinical clerkship shall be processed by his/her home institution in accordance with the regulations of that institution.

4. Financial Information

  • 1) Tuition, registration and admission fees

    • - Tuition fees (14, 800 yen for each 4 week period) are to be paid in advance when the program starts. Registration and admission fees are waived based on the letter of approval from the Dean of the Student's affiliated medical school or the Dean's authorized representative. (If you need additional financial assistance, contact the Office of International Affairs of the Medical School by e-mail.)
    • - Students from a partner institution, which has concluded a tuition fee waiver agreement with Nagoya University tuition, registration and admission fees, are waived.
  • 2) Scholarship and Financial Aid for Students from a Partner Institution

    • - Students from a partner institution (through NUPACE): 91 days to 1 year
      Students who are registered with full time student status in the partner institution and meet the NUPACE eligibility requirements can apply for the JASSO Scholarship (a monthly stipend of 80,000 yen and a one-time study abroad allowance of 80,000 yen after arrival at Nagoya University) through the NUPACE application procedures. Please note that the number of the scholarship slots is very limited.

5. Malpractice, Health and Non-life Insurances

  • 1) Liability insurance

    • All Students are required to carry a Liability Insurance that assures liability arising from bodily injuries or material damage caused to third parties and to show proof of such insurance. If the Student cannot show proof of insurance, he/she is required to pay in order to obtain the insurance used by Nagoya University School of Medicine students (1,520 JPY annual fee)
  • 2) Health and non-life insurances

    • - Students from a partner institution through NUPACE
      The Student is required to pay monthly premiums to the Japan National Health Insurance (JNHI) scheme and to purchase Student Personal Liability Insurance, as offered by the Nagoya University Consumers' Co-operative Association
    • - Other Students
      The Student is required to carry a health insurance policy, which will sufficiently cover his/her own medical care during the period of stay in a foreign country, and to show proof of this insurance.

6. Application Procedures

The number of students we can accept is limited. Please contact international@med.nagoya-u.ac.jp to confirm availability before sending application documents.
* Please include the following personal details when sending your enquiry: Name, Institution and its location (country), intended period of clerkship

  • 1) Application documents

    • i. Application form:

    • ii. Letter of recommendation (to be written by the Dean or the Dean's authorized representative at the applicant's medical school) The letter should state that the applicant is a senior student in good standing
    • iii. Proof of personal health insurance coverage (not required for NUPACE applicants)
    • iv. (The following document is required only if you are planning to stay for more then 31 days) Immunization certificate (to be signed by a physician) Immunization Requirements (pdf). The certificate includes confirmation that the applicant has had a negative response to TB screening and that the applicant is immune or has been immunized to rubella and measles.
    • v. Motivation letter (Study plan of electives)
    • vi. Four identical photographs (3.5cm X4.5 cm), sighed on the reverse side
    • vii. Passport copy
    • viii. Official certification of student (or Copy of student's ID)
    • ix. Official transcript of academic record
  • 2) Application deadline

    • - Students from a partner institution through NUPACE Completed application documents (i-v) must be attached to the NUPACE application forms* and both application forms must reach the NUPACE Office by the date specified on the NUPACE website at: http://nupace.iee.nagoya-u.ac.jp/en/apply/procedures.html
    • - Other Students including students from partner institution not through NUPACE Completed application documents (i-v) must be attached to the NUPACE application forms (only pertinent section, because your application form will not be used for NUPACE) and both application forms must reach the Office of International Affairs of Nagoya University School of Medicine (not the NUPACE Office) four months before the starting date.
