Endowment Established to Create Leonor Michaelis Award at Nagoya University
Ms. Sylvia Kohn who is a granddaughter of Professor Leonor Michaelis has signed an endowment agreement with the Nagoya University School of Medicine of Tokai National University Organization to create The Leonor Michaelis Award. The donated funds will support an annual recognition of exceptional basic medical research.
The award commemorates Professor Leonor Michaelis (1875-1949), a renowned German biochemist and physician. He is best known for developing the Michaelis-Menten formula through his groundbreaking collaboration with Professor Maud Menten, which provides a fundamental explanation of enzyme reaction kinetics. During his academic career, Professor Michaelis served as a lecturer then senior professor in the Department of Medical Chemistry at Prefectural Aichi Medical University from 1st December 1922 to 31st March 1926.
Designed to celebrate Professor Michaelis' scientific contributions, the award will be presented annually to an individual MD course student who demonstrates the most outstanding work in basic medical research at the Nagoya University School of Medicine.
