Introduction

Lung cancer is the leading cause of death in Japan and most Western countries. More than 70,000 people have died of lung cancer in Japan every year. On the other hand, the 5-year survival rate of patients who underwent curative resection has increased from 52% to 70% during this decade. (from Japanese Lung Cancer Registry Study).
In our institution, video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery and robot-assisted surgery are now performed for patients with lung cancer and some mediastinal tumors. On the other hand, multimodality therapy including surgery for advanced lung cancers, thymomas, thymic cancers, and malignant pleural mesotheliomas. Malignant pleural mesothelioma is an asbestos related extremely aggressive tumor which is arising from parietal pleura and its incidence was increased in Japan. We are now considered as one of the eminent treatment facilities in our country.
We are also addressing the comprehensive basic researches for thoracic malignancies including lung cancer, thymic epithelial tumor and malignant mesothelioma.

  1. Analysis for tumorigenesis of thymoma and its clinical implications
  2. Establishment of the technique for histological diagnoses using images gained by micro-computed tomography and assessment for the clinical usefulness
  3. Clinical application of surgical navigation system using image-recognition technique
  4. Intra-tumoral blood flow from chest wall and the pathway of distant metastasis in patients with locally invasive lung cancer
  5. Discovery of blood-based biomarkers for thymic tumors and autoimmune diseases
  6. The prospective observational study for researching the association between the survivals and the amount of malignant pleural effusion in patients of malignant pleuritis
