Introduction

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery was established in 1966; it is almost 50 years old. Its origins lie in the university dental clinic that was established in 1917. Thanks to the consistent efforts of the founders, it has evolved into an academically rich environment full of talented people; there are approximately 50 researchers in the department, with over 50 staff in the associated facilities outside of the university. Research in the department is focused on malignant tumors, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine, and the results are constantly evaluated in terms of quality and quantity. These results include achievements in translational and basic research, clinical trials, advanced medical care, and industrialization in the areas of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

Research Projects

Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine

i) Tissue regeneration using autologous cultured cells

Tissue auto-transplantation is generally required to repair defects in the body, but this comes with associated burdens. Therefore, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine are attractive alternative options. In our laboratory, we study mucosal, skin, and bone defects, as well as spinal cord injuries. The translational aspect of this work was realized with a technology transfer to a bio-company that provides advanced medical care for skin and bone defects. Nagoya University Hospital is the only medical institution in Japan that has been approved by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare for "the Advanced Medical Care: Regenerative bone medicine using bone marrow-derived mesenchymal cells for maxillomandibular bone defect".

ii) Development of tissue repair and regeneration therapy by stem cell-derived exosome

oral_surgery_figure(e).pngThe human body is defective but has repair and regeneration ability. In the case of skin damage or fractures, tissue repair is performed using its healing ability. However, lost tissues and organs are rarely repaired or regenerated. Also, in the dental field, there are many autoimmune diseases designated as intractable diseases, and it is considered to be a chronic disease state and a tissue which can not be repaired or regenerated. In our previous studies, we identified several microRNAs (miRNAs) contained in stem cell-derived exosomes that are thought to play an essential role in damaged tissues. These miRNAs may be involved in the suppression of stem cell aging and the promotion of the survival rate of damaged cells in the process of tissue damage and may be involved in stem cell "anti-aging." In the future, we will analyze the repair and regeneration of endogenous stem cells and cells in their minimal environment.
