Introduction

The Department of Psychiatry is the place within the Nagoya University, School of Medicine for specialists who are expert in the origins of and treatments for psychiatric disorders. The department includes clinical (department of psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry) and graduate (psychiatry, psychobiology, development of geriatric psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry) divisions. Chair of the department is Professor Norio Ozaki. The goals of the department are to deliver innovative and personalized care to our patients, train the next generation of leaders in psychiatry and to improve our understanding of complex human behavior and the causes and consequences of broad range of neuropsychiatric disorders - from the childhood to the old age.

The Department of Psychiatry's research portfolio is substantial and wide-ranging. The genetic studies conducted by our group are focused on identifying individual genes that contribute to susceptibility of mental disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder to clarify the pathogenesis of these conditions. In addition, our group is conducting histological studies using postmortem brain. Furthermore, we are carrying out neurocognitive or neuroimaging studies. Finally, investigators in our group are involved in epidemiological studies of postpartum depression, psycho-oncology and psychocardiology. Our diverse research programs, employing creative research methodologies, are truly 'translational' - using the insights gained in the laboratory for the benefit of patients, with the goal to understand, cope with, treat and ultimately cure severe mental illnesses.

Research Projects

Mission Statement: evaluation current method for diagnosis, and treatment, as well as development of new psychiatric methods for prevention and treatment based on clarification of pathogenesis associated with mental disorders.

# Clinical research: clarifying the psychosocial characteristics and drug treatment of psychiatric diagnostic evaluation is currently available
 - Select a therapy that can be run on a review of the biopsychosocial aspects of diagnosis and evaluation
 - Target diseases: schizophrenia, mood disorders, eating disorders, somatoform disorders, and developmental disorders

# Epidemiological studies: to identify factors associated with the incidence and prevalence of major psychiatric disorders
 - Secondary prevention (early diagnosis and early treatment) - identifying high-risk groups
 - Primary prevention (prophylaxis), identification of risk factors
 -Examples-
 * Maternal Depression: A Study in consideration of psychosocial factors genome cohort
 * Occupational Health: A study of early detection and intervention methods developed for epidemiological studies depression
 * Research on epidemiology/treatment of depression, and anxiety disorders which occur in patients with heart failure patients with cancer in transplant patients in oral and maxillofacial surgery

# Pathophysiology Physiology Research: Studies aimed at understanding disease pathogenesis
 - Understanding of disease pathogenesis: patients and families overcome the societal preconceptions: anti stigma mission
 - Based on the pathogenesis and prophylactic treatment based on pathogenesis
 - Diagnostic system based on disease diagnosis - etiology
 - Methodology: the genome (molecular biology), Cognitive Science (neuroimaging), neuropathology techniques
 - Target diseases: schizophrenia, mood disorders, eating disorders, developmental disabilities, and dementia

Our projects
1. Study on psychiatric aspects of head and neck cancer patients

  • About 25 percent of cancer patients will experience major depression over the course of their illness. Head and neck cancer can leave patients especially prone to depression and suicide. The reason: This cancer affects the basics -- chewing, breathing, and speaking. Also, the treatment is very intense. And if there is disfigurement, the entire world can see it. The goal of study is to examine factors associated with depression, anxiety, and early detection - in order to intervene timely.

2. Identification of the biological psychosocial factors involved in depression and the incidence of complications in chronic heart failure

  • Early detection and treatment of depression in heart patients are crucial to improve a patient's quality of life and possibly prevent a recurrent coronary event. When left untreated, depression can worsen heart disease and increase the risk of a heart attack. Safe treatments are available to help you cope with depression and help you manage your heart disease. The goal of our research is to identify the biological and psychosocial factors related to development of complications, and aims to improve treatment.

3. Mental illness, psychotropic drugs, clarifying changes in cognitive function of aging Kiokosu driving skills

  • Driving is an important element in implementing the social life in our country. However, function of central nervous system related to driving skills are not clarified, and mental illness (e.g. dementia), patients may be taking psychotropic drugs at time driving license is issued or renewed.. Thus, mental illness, psychotropic drugs, to clarify whether changes in cognitive aging Kiokosu driving skills, prevent traffic accidents expected to return to work support the development of cognitive rehabilitation, elderly friendly cars more patients with psychiatric disorders aims to obtain evidence of development.

4. Pathogenesis of anorexia nervosa using a cognitive approach genome

  • Anorexia nervosa has high mortality rate, often become chronic, and is severe mental illness. However, the pathogenesis is largely unknown and there is no effective treatment. The characteristic of anorexia nervosa is distorted body image and genetic factors are most probably involved. More attention to, cognitive science, using the technique to elucidate the pathogenesis of genomics, aims to develop better treatment.

5. Investigation of gene environment interaction through genome cohort maternal depression study

  • Our understanding of the causes of depression remains uncompleted, despite varied research. The research itself is the key to effective prevention and treatment. An understanding of the molecular pathways causing depression is required, which in turn may open the doors to novel research for therapeutic targets. Our group utilizes the resource of maternal genome cohort. This cohorts is large and with detailed phenotypic information and the data across individuals can provide insight into the nature of genetic variation in the population and gene environment interaction that can help us to identify both genetic and environmental factors that are relevant for postpartum depression.

6. The search for biological markers that contribute to the diagnosis of mental disorders including bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and autistic spectrum disorders.

  • Our research is focused on the biological markers of mental disorders in order to complement studies conducted on behavioral markers. Identifying the biological markers will not only help in establishing more objective diagnosis of the schizophrenia and bipolar disorder but, importantly, could shed light on the biological basis of these conditions. This understanding will ultimately pave the way to preemptive and precision medicine for mental disorders.

7. Pathogenesis of autistic spectrum disorders, schizophrenia etiology of bipolar disorder

  • Autistic spectrum disorders, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are complex genetic disorders, which likely involve many genes each producing a slight increase in risk. We are using genetic approaches complementary to traditional linkage and association analyses to find genetic etiologies and risk factors. For instance, we are using state of the art "chip" technology to understand the potential contribution of genetic factors (e.g. rare and common variants) to the risk of developing schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The potential impact is great: early and accurate diagnosis, objective data on disease course and the success of treatment, and leads into developing new and better treatments.
