Introduction

Our department specializes Cardiac and thoracic aortic surgery. We perform about 300 surgeries per year mainly for valvular heart diseases, ischemic heart disease, and thoracic aortic aneurysm. We also start to perform ventricular asist device implantation and heart transplantation for patients with severe heart failure.
Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and removing of pacemaker leads with laser sheath has also been performed. We establish large scale clinical database and perform clinical research works in order to improve surgical outcomes. Many manuscripts have been published on worldwide journals about clinical studies for thoracic aortic surgery, valvular surgery, or surgery for atrial fibrillation. Retrograde cerebral perfusion as brain protection for aortic arch surgery is our original work, which has confirmed first in the world.

Research System

Our department specializes basic and clinical study for Cardiac and thoracic aortic surgery. We have a history of developing the first cardiopulmonary machine in Japan in 1952 by Prof. Hiroshi Toda. We assume the motto “Research for clinical works” and continue basic and clinical research works.
We have studied about mechanism of aneurysm formation and developed anti-aneurysmal therapy. We also develop small diameter artificial graft based on tissue engineering technique and perform cell transplantation and heart net therapy for dilated cardiomyopathy. In clinical works, we performed about 300 surgeries per year minly for valvular heart diseases, ischemic heart disease and thoracic aortic aneurysm. For young trainee for cardiac surgeon

Nagoya University is a teaching hospital for a cardiovascular surgeon. We perform about 3000 cardiac and aortic surgery in a year in Nagoya University group with 22 affiliated hospitals. We provide enough clinical volume for young trainee for cardiac surgeon.
We educate young trainee to gain bouth board of general surgery and cardiovascular surgery and graduate PH-D course to earn doctorate.
