OUTLINE

The National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology (NCGG), which is composed of the National Hospital for Geriatric Medicine and the Research Institute, is one of the six national centers for advanced and specialized medicine in Japan. Our mission is to dedicate ourselves to promotion of the physical and mental health of the elderly.

The NCGG has been conducting the epidemiological study “National Institute for Longevity Sciences-Longitudinal Study of Aging: NILS-LSA” since 1997.

This partnership chair manages the epidemiological study (NILS-LSA) and conducts multicenter collaborative studies based on the prevention of aging and age-related diseases with research institutes inside and outside Japan.

With a high follow-up rate and collaborations with national and local governments that realize the linkage with official information, such as the long-term care insurance system or cause of death (vital statistics), NILS-LSA is one of leading cohort studies on aging and age-related diseases in Japan.

RESEARCH PROJECTS

Long-term longitudinal epidemiological study "National Institute for Longevity Sciences - Longitudinal Study of Aging (NILS-LSA)"

The main purpose of NILS-LSA is systematic observation and description of the process of normal aging in Japanese people to clarify to identify factors associated with longevity. Our experts in various fields, including medicine, kinesiology, nutrition, and psychology, cooperate to collect and analyze detailed study data.

2. Multicenter collaborative studies on aging and age-related disease prevention

Utilizing the samples and data of NILS-LSA, we conduct multicenter collaborative studies in industry-government-academia partnerships with research institutes, universities, and companies inside and outside Japan.

MESSAGE

We welcome students who are interested in our collaborative course. Please note that this collaborative course includes some practical tasks with older Japanese community dwellers. Therefore, high-level Japanese skills (equivalent to N1 on the Japanese Language Proficiency Test: JLPT) are essential for communication with them and for data collection/organization purposes. For these reasons, graduate school applicants invariably need to be interviewed in Japanese.
