Description "TODA Hiroshi Kyoju Kyobu Kokan Shinkei Setsujo no Zu (Portrait of Professor TODA Hiroshi Performing Surgery on Thoracic Sympathetic Nerves)" (located in the School of Medicine Library 4F, School of Medicine Historical Records Office) was painted by TOKORO Teruo (1906-1990), and shows TODA Hiroshi (1906-1953) performing surgery using a head-mounted mirror to illuminate the depths of the operation area. TODA pioneered vascular surgery and sympathetic nerve surgery, as well as developing the first heart-lung machine in Japan. TOKORO Teruo was born in Ibi-gun, Gifu Prefecture; in Showa year 7 (1932) he graduated from the national Nagoya Medical College, and played an active role as a fellow of the Independent Art Association and the Japan Art Institute.
