Description |
"SAITO Makoto Kyoju No-shujutsu no Zu (Portrait of Professor SAITO Makoto Performing Brain Surgery)" (located in the Medical Library 3F Reading Room) was painted by Aichi Medical College student TOKORO Teruo (1906-1990), upon being commissioned for a portrait by SAITO Makoto (1889-1950), who pioneered the study of neurosurgery in Japan after his return from France.
Directly after the War, and again in Showa year 61 (1986), the war-damaged portrait was restored by TOKORO himself.
TOKORO Teruo was born in Ibi-gun, Gifu Prefecture; in Showa year 7 (1932) he graduated from the national Nagoya Medical College, and played an active role as a fellow of the Independent Art Association and the Japan Art Institute. |
