Description |
A yakuro is a medicine chest for house calls.
Doctors would use this kind of box to store medicines ground to a fine powder with a Yagen (a Japanese traditional pharmaceutical tool to crush and grind ingredients into fine powder), as well as infusions; when making a house call, their apprentice would carry the chest for them.
There were chests with pull-out drawers and chests with multiple tiers; they were frequently used, from the time Chinese medicine became commonplace to the middle of the Meiji period.Envelopes for medicine were included.
This medicine chest is relatively new: it is assumed to date from the middle of the Meiji period. |
