Description A certificate of graduation from October, Meiji year 14 (1881), when GOTO Shinpei (1857-1929) was president of Aichi Medical School. The pattern of peaches at the top and clams at the bottom was designed by GOTO Shinpei himself. This design was adopted to reflect the idea of Onko Chishin, i.e. learning from the past to gain a new perspective and understanding, which means referring to both theories from Western countries and the ancient doctrines that held that peaches could exterminate infectious disease, while clams had the power to heal scalds or burns. In the "Second Report on Aichi Hospital and Medical School" (1880), it states that "in June, Meiji year 14, the template for a certificate of graduation for this School was created and the engraving of a printing plate therefor was entrusted to the Printing Bureau, Ministry of Finance". GOTO Shinpei was born in Shiogama-mura, Isawa-gun, Mutsu-no-kuni (now Mizusawa Ward, Oshu City in Iwate Prefecture). He studied at Sukagawa Medical School in Fukushima Prefecture, before starting work at Aichi Prefecture Hospital in Meiji year 9 (1876) at the age of 20. In May, Meiji year 13 (1880), he succeeded YOKOI Nobuyuki (1846-1891) as acting director and acting president of Aichi Prefectural Public Hospital and Public Medical School respectively, and in May, Meiji year 14 (1881) at the age of 24 he became director and president of the Hospital and School, respectively.
