Description This record consists of transcripts of Erwin von BALZ's (1849-1913) lectures at Tokyo Medical School. BALZ was born in Bietigheim in southern Germany; in 1866 he completed a course of study in medicine at University of Tubingen, and studied clinical practice at Leipzig University.In Meiji year 9 (1876), while a lecturer at Leipzig University, BALZ was invited to Tokyo Medical School; at first he specialized in physiology and pharmacology, and later went on to teach internal medicine and pathology, etc.Until his retirement in Meiji year 35 (1902), he contributed to the birth and development of medicine and anthropology in Japan. He left behind his work "Das Leben eines deutschen Arztes im erwachenden Japan (Awakening Japan: The Diary of a German Doctor)". Vortraege der allgemeinen Pathologie / von E. Balz
