This record contains transcripts of Emil August Wilhelm SCHULTZE's (1840-1924) lectures at Tokyo Medical School.
SCHULTZE was born in Berlin; in 1863 he graduated from the Medicinisch-chirurgische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Institut, and became a military surgeon.After campaigning in the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71), he went to London; returning home in 1872, he introduced disinfection, which he had learned about from Joseph LISTER (1827-1912), to Germany.
In Meiji year 7 (1874), he succeeded Benjamin Carl Leopold M?LLER (1824-1893) as a teacher at Tokyo Medical School.He mainly taught surgery; as well as giving clinical lectures on surgery, he was also in charge of ophthalmology, and introduced Lister's method to Japan.
He was employed there for seven years, returning home for short trips, and in Meiji year 14 (1881) returned to Germany for good.
