Description |
This picture was painted by SHIBATA HoshuH (1840-1890), a ukiyoe artist born in Aichi Prefecture, upon commission by Albrecht von RORETZ (1846-1884).
RORETZ studied at the Vienna University School of Medicine during the period of the Second Viennese School; in Meiji year 7 (1874), at the age of 28, he came to Japan as medical officer to the Austrian legation and conducted research in natural history. In Meiji year 9 (1876), he received an invitation from Aichi Prefecture to become director of the Hospital and vice president of the Medical Training School; in May of the same year he came to Nagoya with official translator SHIBA Mitsuyuki (1839-1879), and took up a position at Aichi Prefectural Public Hospital and the Public Medical Training School as successor to T. H. JUNGHANS.
RORETZ, shown on the left with his sleeves tucked up with a cord and wearing glasses, putting the patient under anesthetic, was painted as an old man at his own request, although at the time he was a young doctor of around 30 years old.
It is said that the doctor with one knee raised performing the operation is GOTO Shinpei (1857-1929), and that the man in Japanese clothing supporting the patient's right arm is SHIBA Mitsuyuki (1839-1879); the gentleman wearing checkered trousers and cleaning the affected part is said to be HAYAKAWA Yojun.
This picture is said to be one of the oldest examples of a visual record of an operation using a Skinner's mask for chloroform anesthesia in the history of modern Japanese surgery.
