Description In July of Meiji year 10 (1877), the Public Hospital and Public Medical Training School moved to the newly-constructed Hospital and Medical School built on the site of the former Senga residence, an approx. 19,000㎡ site in Horikawa-suji, Ten'nozaki.The layout was designed by official translator SUZUKI Muneyasu. A native of Tokyo, SUZUKI became OGAWA Zenji's successor as a doctor and translator at the Hospital in Meiji year 7 (1874).A variety of flowering trees were planted between the buildings, which opened onto the rich rural landscape beyond the Horikawa. Entering by the main gate on the west side (bottom section of the map), the hospital was in the south (right) part; the front building was for outpatient care, and next to it the supplementary ward space in the south (right) were the teachers' building."Doktor von Roretz" was written on a sign on the building's gatepost.The six wings at the rear (top section of the map) were the hospital wards.The Medical Institute was located in the north (left) part, and number one to number three held the classrooms, dormitories, dissection department, morgue, etc.For the time in which it was built, it was an imposing pseudo-Western style structure.
