SHIBA Mitsuyuki (1839-1879) was born on Sadogashima in Niigata Prefecture.His childhood name was SHIMAKURA Inosuke. His nickname, by which he went as an adult, was Ryokai, while his true name was Mitsuyuki.
A natural at languages, he spoke six: German, English, Dutch, French, Russian and Chinese.He studied under MATSUMOTO Ryojun (1832-1907) and POMPE (Johannes Lijdius Catharinus POMPE VAN MEERDERVOORT, 1829-1908), learning medicine and making many Japanese translations of medical terms.(For example, protein, nitrogen, duodenum etc.)
In May of Meiji year 9 (1876) he took up a position with RORETZ as his official translator, entering employment at the Aichi Prefectural Public Hospital and Public Medical Training School. |
