Description Albrecht von RORETZ (1846-1884; written in kanji characters as "老烈") studied at the Vienna University School of Medicine during the period of the Second Viennese School; in Meiji year 7 (1874), at the age of 28, he came to Japan as medical officer to the Austrian legation and conducted research in natural history.In Meiji year 9 (1876), he received an invitation from Aichi Prefecture to become director of the Hospital and vice president of the Medical Training School; in May of the same year he came to Nagoya with official translator SHIBA Mitsuyuki (1839-1879), and took up a position at Aichi Prefectural Public Hospital and the Public Medical Training School as successor to T. H. JUNGHANS. His term of office expired in Meiji year 13 (1880), after his three-year contract had been extended by one year.After this, he was employed at Kanazawa Medical School and Saiseikan in Yamagata; returning to Austria, he worked as director of a hospital on the outskirts of Vienna, but died suddenly in Meiji year 17 (1884) at the age of 37.
