Description In May of Meiji year 6 (1873), the Hospital, restored at Nishi Honganji Betsuin, signed a three-year teaching contract with German-American T. H. JUNGHANS (written in kanji characters as "雍翰斯"), who had lately retired from a teaching position at Saga Prefecture Koseikan Hospital.He was the first foreign teacher to be hired by Nagoya University.His dates of birth and death, full name, graduating school and degrees received are all unknown; not even a photograph remains. However, JUNGHANS played a great role in medical treatment in the Hospital, as well as in lectures and public autopsies at the Medical Training School; In September, Meiji year 7 (1874) he amazed the public by carrying out the first skin graft on the left leg of a burn patient ever to be performed in Japan.The younger brother of the patient donated the skin of his left elbow. n April 1876 the employment period for JUNGHANS, ADACHI Moriyoshi (1836-1896) and SUZUKI Muneyasu ended; as a reward for his services, JUNGHANS was presented with a pair of cloisonn? vases and 150 yen in cash.20 yen in cash was given to both ADACHI and SUZUKI. The contract is signed by JUNGHANS and NAGAI Matsuemon, in his capacity as executive secretary of Aichi Prefectural Public Hospital. "NAGAI Matsuemon, under the jurisdiction of Aichi Prefecture, concludes this contract with United States of America physician JUNGHANS"
