Description UDAGAWA Shinsai (1769-1834) was the child of YASUOKA Shiroemon from Ise Iinan-gun; his real first name was Rin, but he usually went by the name "Genshin ", while his pen-name was Shinsai. He began by learning Chinese medicine, but after being taught classical Chinese studies by UDAGAWA Genzui (1756-1798) in Edo he fixed his sights on Western (i.e. Dutch of that time) medicine, learning from such teachers as Otsuki Gentaku (1757-1827). His "Ihan Teiko Naisho Dobanzu" was Japan's first volume of copperplate anatomical drawings. The drawings were reproduced from Dutch anatomy books such as Steven BLANKAART's "De nieuw hervormde anatomia". UDAGAWA Shinsai was the first to coin and use technical terms such as "sen" (gland) and "sui" (pancreas).
