Description In Meiwa year 8 (1771), SUGITA Genpaku (1733-1817), MAENO Ryotaku (1723-1803) and NAKAGAWA Jun'an (1739-1786) went to view autopsies of the bodies that had been executed at Kozukappara in Edo; amazed at the accuracy of the book on anatomy they had brought along, they began a translation of it. The anatomy book in question was a second edition of "Ontleedkundige Tafelen" (1734), a Dutch translation of the medical text "Anatomische Tabellen (Anatomical Tables)" (1722) by German physician Johann Adam KULMUS (1689-1745). "Kaitai Shinsho (New Book of Anatomy)" is composed of one volume containing a foreword and anatomical diagrams, and four volumes for the main work itself.
