This department hosts research and clinical activities in otology, rhinology, pharyngolaryngology, broncho-esophagology, and head and neck surgery, all backed by state-of-the-art diagnostics. In otology, emphasis is on the diagnosis and treatment of conductive and sensorineural deafness and on the surgical management of otitis media, otosclerosis and perilymphatic fistulae. The chief rhinology interest is in the therapy of allergic rhinitis and sinusitis. Speech and phoniatric disorders take precedence in pharyngolaryngology. In broncho-esophagology, the focus is on diagnosis and treatment of stage II dysfunction of swallowing.
Medical and surgical therapies (including reconstructive surgery) for tumors of the head and neck are routinely undertaken.
Major current research projects include studies on cochlear deafness, otoacoustic emissions, evoked potential responses, cochlear blood flow, and immunology and morphology of the inner ear.
