Experience Report

LIU Qizhi from Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine
2016.12-2017.2 for ten weeks
Gynecology and Obstetrics Department for 4 weeks
Nephrology Department for 3 weeks
Neurology Department for 3 weeks

I feel really honored to be able to share my experience and feeling with you after the wonderful ten-week internship in Nagoya University Hospital. The ten weeks were both fulfilling and exciting. Although it’s my third time to Japan, it’s the first time for me to stay such a long time in a foreign country. I have not only acquired a lot of knowledge about clinical medicine, but also understood more about Japan medical system and Japanese culture.

The first department I’ve been to was Gynecology and Obstetrics Department. During the 4 weeks, I had many chances to observe surgeries in both oncology and obstetrics team. I even had several opportunities to be part of the surgery team, which have been great and precious experience for me. During the surgeries, doctors gave me detailed introduction about the diseases and the process of the surgeries. It’s also the first time for me to be able to take a close look at assisted reproductive surgeries during the one week in assisted reproduction team, which might be the only chance in my medical career.
The doctors in Nephrology Department were all very nice and kindly. I’ve been given several small lectures by different doctors, and they were all very inspiring. Besides introduction about the patients in the ward, doctors also gave me detailed explanation about how hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis worked and their differences. I also met a graduate student who graduated from the same university as me in the Nephrology Department, who answered a lot of my questions with patience and showed me around the hospital.

The final department of my internship was Neurology Department. I was scheduled as least one lecture given by those experienced doctors, which gave me opportunities to be able to communicate with them closely. I also spent three days in the neurology department in Nagoya Medical Center, where I met a lot of young doctors and had pleasant conversations with them. The professor of neurology department, Pro. Katsuno, was very gentle and warmhearted. He spared several hours from his busy schedule to discuss the case report I wrote with me and asked for my opinions of the internship schedule.

Life in Nagoya was very comfortable and exciting. There are convenient stores everywhere, and people there are all very nice and patient to answer my questions. Teachers in the international affair office always replied my email as soon as they could in detail. All those staff in the international residence were very kindly and the dormitory was very well-equipped. It’s very convenient to travel almost everywhere in Japan from Nagoya by Shinkansen, bus, flight or train. I travelled a lot of places, such as Kyoto, Osaka, Tokyo, Kobe, Fukuoka and so on. And I had a deeper understanding about Japanese culture through those trips and all those wonderful conversations I had during the ten-week in Japan.
This internship is unforgettable to me, and I’ll definitely go to Japan and Nagoya again when I have opportunity in the future.
