Experience Report

Sun Tingye from Shanghai Jiaotong University, China
Period:2015/12/28-2016/1/22
Department: Psychiatry

I feel honored to share my experience with you.
Coincidentally, some schoolmates in Shanghai also inquired me about this exchange program. And every time I’d like to use the word “amazing” to describe my 8-week experience in Nagoya University Hospital. What I received during these 8 weeks is not only medical knowledge, but also gracious friendship from both doctors and students.
In Obstetrics department, I still remember clearly that Dr.Moriyama instructed me to give a B-ultrasonic examination for a pregnant woman. Since that was my first time to use this device, I was a bit of nervous. But Dr. Mariyama was so patient and helpful, I successfully measured the BPD,FL and AC of the fetus finally. And in order to help me better follow the Cesarean section, he taught me the anatomy and operation procedures using his well-illustrated textbook. I have never thought that I would engaged in Obstetrics before, while in Nagoya, I fell in love with Obstetrics. My 1-week in Gynecology department was also unforgettable, especially when I even gained the chance to give a skin suture for one patient.

During my next 4-week in Gastroenterological Surgery department, I was impressed by the severe cases doctors dealt with and the excellet skills surgeons possessed. There were always some guiding doctors who earnestly gave me and other students useful information about the operation. And I was so lucky to join the New Year party of this department and experience the Japanese party culture.
How time flew, my last 2 weeks was in Paediatrics department. This department is famous for its Hematology/Oncology and many extremely ill patients gathered here. So on one hand, doctors made regimen for each patient, on the other hand, they constructed database upon which influential researches are produced. As for my last week in NICU, I had the opportunity to learn several CDH cases and see some neonatal resuscitation procedures. What shocked me most was the specialized school and studying room beside the ward, which were equipped for those unfortunately sick school children. And this was only a common example to reflect the consideration and humanization of Japanese health care system.
What about life in Japan? Quite good. I must say that Japan is a country easy to live. Convenient stores are everywhere and one can always get what he or she need in these seemingly small stores. Besides, the dormitory for international students is so comfortable and well-equipped that far beyond my expectation. But the most important thing is that Japanese people are all friendly and warmhearted.Maybe that is why I am able to make a lot of Japanese friends not only in the hospital but also during my trips. Although some of them might not speak English well, they still try their best to help me . Of course I also went traveling in Japan, like Tokyo, Kyoto, Izu, Ise, Takayama, Toyama where I enjoyed the beautiful scenery and delicious Japanese cuisine.
