I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Nagoya University and I am extremely glad that I was able to undertake part of my elective placement here. Months before I arrived in Nagoya, I was impressed by the International Office’s quick and helpful responses to my many queries about the application process and the placement.

During the placement I always felt very welcome in the Nephrology department. I was given opportunities to see haemodialysis patients, peritoneal dialysis patients, vasculitis patients, ward rounds, outpatient clinics and was taken to see other haemodialysis clinics in Nagoya. Also I was involved with many departmental conferences about renal pathology.

Everyone in the department was extremely friendly and was always very keen to help me with anything from nephrology to my weekend travel plans. Nagoya is quite conveniently located if you want to see other areas of Japan on the weekends as there are direct buses and shinkansen to Kyoto, Tokyo and many more places.

My Japanese is very limited, but there was always someone who was willing to translate for me. I believe that even if you can’t speak or understand much Japanese, you would still benefit from a placement at Nagoya University as all the doctors could speak English rather well.

Overall, I had an amazing time during my placement at Nagoya University and I wish I could have stayed longer. I have met many lovely people who I hope to keep in contact with for a long time.
