I spent three months at Nagoya University Hospital for my clinical clerkship with four weeks rotation in gastroenterological, thoracic and vascular surgery. I found the entire experience particularly inspiring and educative. I had the possibility to join surgery, help surgeons as assistant and practice in the simulation room with other Japanese students. I found the spaces provided with highly technological instruments and I saw expert surgeons operating in robotic surgery.
I could watch surgeries every day, with a wide variety of surgical procedures: from esophageal and gastric resection to IBD disease and hepatobiliary surgery. I could widen my knowledge about some rare diseases in Europe that have a higher incidence in Japan.
I was welcomed directly by Professor Yoshikawa and I was introduced to his team. There I could join the surgeons during the procedures as assistant and see a lot of minimally invasive and RATS surgery with DaVinci robot. I really felt to be part of the team, free to ask questions about all the pathologies, cases and Japanese guidelines.
This was the last rotation of my experience. In addition to emergency procedures, we performed surgery twice a week and I could join surgery assisting professor Banno and his collaborators. I enjoyed both open and endovascular procedures that were performed in a specific hybrid operation room.
