Experience report

Name: Luo Jing
School: Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, CHINA
Study Period: 11/05/2019-01/10/2020
Departments: Dermatology, Vascular Surgery, Ophthalmology

It is my first time to Japan and the program started two days after my arrival. As I can speak no Japanese, it is indeed a great relief to find there are at least one to two doctors who can communicate fluently in English!

I spent the first three weeks in Dermatology Department and I have to say it is the most adorable department ever. All the doctors and nurses were so caring to the patients and tried their best to get me involved in their daily practice including the outpatient clinic, operations, rounds etc. The whole department seems quite harmonious to me and they invited me to the Year-end Party, at which I had a really good time! The Vascular Surgery Department was full of male doctors and they worked from 8:00 to 22:00? on average, quite impressed by their obligation to patients! I also scrubbed in several operations to assist in some elementary work. Ophthalmology department was an “outgoing” department, they were like friends rather than coworkers from the professor to the residencies. I got the chance to practice on the eyesi machine and learned some basic knowledge about OCT, AMD etc. Definitely a good department to visit if the student is interested in ophthalmology!

In a nutshell, it is going to be a great experience during my 10 weeks in Japan, thanks a lot!
