Experience report

Name: Tong Li
School: Peking University
Study Period: 2018 11/5-12/7
Departments: Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery; Hand Surgery

It was a privilege to rotate through the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Hand Surgery at Nagoya University Hospital and a time that I will cherish forever. As a medical student just graduated from University, it was a rarely opportunity to participate in so many operations in five weeks.

In the first day in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. Takanali took me to the operating room and started my study schedule as an observation of breast reconstruction. During the three weeks, I learned more than 30 surgeries ranging from 30 minutes to 10 hours. If the operation was simple, I would have opportunity to operate on the stage as an assistant. Every time I had this kind of opportunity, I felt very excited. It gave me a closer experience of what it was like to have surgery.

For two weeks in hand surgery, I attended the department meetings, ward rounds every morning and observed the operation all day. Most exciting of all, with the help of professor Hirata, I went to Osaka to attend the 45th annual meeting of the Japanese society for reconstructive microsurgery and had the honor to personally complete the nerve suture under the microscope in the workshop. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience for young doctors. I would like to thank the professor for his care and help to me.

During the weekend, I went to many places for sightseeing and experienced the local conditions and customs, including Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Shizuoka, Fuji, Yokohama and Tokyo. Temples in Kyoto, universal studios in Osaka, deer in Nara, cherry Maruko in Shizuoka, Fuji Mountain in Fuji, Chinese street in Yokohama and the prosperity of Tokyo had deeply attracted me and left me an indelible impression.

Japan, it's hard to say goodbye. I'll be back someday in the future.
