Experience Stories in Nagoya Univ. School of Medicine

Mr. Wheatley from U.S.A.

Department: Orthopedic Surgery

As a senior medical student, this has been the most rewarding and exciting clinical rotation I have participated in to date. In my short tenure at Nagoya University I was able to join many of the sections of the Orthopedics Department as well as explore Japan and its rich cultural heritage. Both of which were fascinating and very enlightening. I observed and participated in a wide variety of operations including tumor debulking, total joint replacements and spinal decompressions just to name a few. I was shown many new surgical techniques that I have not previously seen employed in the United States. The department’s staff was always eager to discuss cases with me and compare Japanese and American treatments. Everyone went out of their way to welcome me and to include me in every aspect of the everyday functioning of the department. I could not have asked for a more educational experience in a more unique place. This will be a memory that lasts for a lifetime!
