TUMOR RESEARCH TEAM

The brain tumor research team is one of the leading laboratories bringing together scientists and physicians who share a common interest in developing and using state-of-the-art technologies and developing novel diagnostic markers. The team has published more than 50 peer-review international articles for the recent three years and is directed
by Atsushi Natsume, MD, PhD.


CLINICAL-ORIENTED BASIC RESEARCH
The goals of the team are to identify fundamental genetic and epigenetic alterations from normal brain cells to pre-cancerous hyperplasia and to eventual highly malignant tumors and to develop new ways to diagnose diseases in patients. Approximately 1,000 glioma samples in Japan have been analyzed by NGS.



ANIMAL-ORIENTED BASIC RESEARCH

MADM (Mosaic Analysis with Double Markers)-system enables us to trace pre-transformed cells during tumor formation by GFP (Green Fluorescent Protein). Recently much evidence revealed that the accumulation of epigenetic alterations such as aberrant DNA methylation (G-CIMP) and histone modifications may play important roles in a stepwise proneural GBM formation. Using MADM mice, we analyze alterations of histone modifications in pre-transformed cells and tumor cells).


BASIC-ORIENTED CLINICAL RESEARCH

Genetically-engineered T cells harboring the tumor antigen-specific chimeric receptors and genetically -modified cancer-stem cells were generated for the next generation clinical studies.
