Description In Meiwa year 8 (1771), SUGITA Genpaku (1733-1817), MAENO Ryotaku (1723-1803) and NAKAGAWA Jun'an (1739-1786) went to view autopsies of the bodies that had been executed at Kozukappara in Edo; amazed at the accuracy of the book on anatomy they had brought along, they began a translation of it. The anatomy book in question was a second edition of "Ontleedkundige Tafelen" (1734), a Dutch translation of the medical text "Anatomische Tabellen (Anatomical Tables)" (1722) by German physician Johann Adam KULMUS (1689-1745). "Kaitai Shinsho (New Book of Anatomy)" is composed of one volume containing a foreword and anatomical diagrams, and four volumes for the main work itself. 解体新書 / [与般亜単闕児武思撰] ; 杉田玄白翼訳,中川淳庵鱗校,石川玄常世通参,桂川甫周世民閲. 東武 : 須原屋市兵衛 , 1774
