Experience Report

Christopher Belder from The University of Adelaide, Australia
Period:2015/4/13 – 5/8
Department: Neurology

The Neurology Clerkship at Nagoya University Hospital was a fantastic experience. All of the medical staff were very welcoming and made considerable effort to involve me despite a significant language barrier, as I do not speak Japanese.

The clerkship provided exposure to the Japanese health care system and a wide range of clinical cases, with an emphasis on neurodegenerative disease, neuropathy and myopathy, many of which are quite rare and would be encountered quite infrequently in practice in Australia. It also provided considerable exposure to neuroimaging, and I was able to observe neurophysiological testing such as EEG, nerve conduction studies, electromyography and autonomic function tests.

The lectures provided by the department were uniformly excellent and covered a broad range of topics, from the basic science underlying neurodegenerative disease and translational research, to the clinical evaluation of neurological disease.

I would like to thank the Department of Neurology and the staff at Nagoya University Graduate School of Medicine for providing me with the opportunity to undertake this clerkship.
