The Department of General Medicine functions as a collaborative network with
the following purposes:

1) Persuing the provision of integrated health care sevices which can cover
a large majority of personal health care needs, developing a sustained
partnership with patients, and considering the context of family and
community.

2) Training physicians who will be competent in general medicine and behave
patient-centered way.

3) Advancing knowledge, skills and attitude that will be required for every
clinician despite their specialty.

4) Conducting community-based and cross-cultural research for primary care

Nobutaro Ban , MD, PhD
Dr. Ban is Professor and Chair of the Department of General Medicine at the
Nagoya University Hospital in Nagoya, Aichi prefecture. Dr. Ban received
his M.D. degree from the Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine in 1979,
after which he completed his family practice residency training at the
Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska from 1980-1983. After going back to
Japan, he worked for the National Nagasaki Chuo Hospital from 1983 to 1989,
when he moved to the Kawasaki Medical School. He worked there from 1989 to
1998. He has been in current position since October 1, 1998. @His primary
research interests focus on medical education and primary health care.

Juichi Sato, MD, PhD
Dr. Sato is Assistant Professor and Associate Chair of the Department of
General Medicine at the Nagoya University Hospital in Nagoya, Aichi
prefecture. Dr. Sato received his M.D. degree from the Nagoya University
in 1986, after which he completed his postgraduate clinical training at the
Fukuroi Municipal Hospital in Fukroi, Shizuoka from 1986-1989. After
finshing his postgraduate clinical training, he entered in the Postgraduate
School, Nagoya Univresity from 1989 to 1993, when he moved to the Nagoya
University Hospital. He worked there from 1993 to 1994, when he moved to
the Indiana University for biochemical molecular biology research. He was
there from 1994 to 1995. He move to the Medical School, Nagoya City
Uiversity in 1996 and worked there till when he took current position on
October 1, 1999. @His primary research interests focus on preventive
medicine in primary health care.
